History
Athlone Little Theatre is an amateur dramatic group presenting top class productions of plays by local, national and international authors.
Athlone Little Theatre Group was founded in 1936 by a group of local drama enthusiasts under the direction of Lt. Michael Cosgrove. With no fixed place for performance or rehearsal, the Group attracted enough members and, thanks to the local Military Authorities, staged its first production, The New Gossoon by George Shiels, in the Gymnasium at Custume Barracks. The Group has performed continuously ever since staging up to four productions annually.
In the 1960s, a scout’s den (which was formerly a school) was secured under a lease agreement with the Church Authorities and in February 1965, after much reconstruction and development, a fully functioning theatre, accommodating 100 patrons, was opened. The first production there was The Return Room written by the company’s long serving producer Aileen Coughlan.
Further renovations took place in 2013 at which time full ownership of the building was transferred to the Group.
The Group welcomes new members and provides opportunities for new talent in acting, directing and stagecraft as we endeavour to improve and enhance our supports and facilities.
With over fifty members, and a devoted customer base, Athlone Little Theatre continues to entertain and engage in equal measure providing a valuable and valued contribution to the artistic fabric of the community.
